Janet Russell
B.Sc. (Biology), M.Sc. (Biopsychology)
Janet co-produced Open Air and Rare Air with Rachel Bryant. She
now runs the audio book publishing venture Rattling
Books. When not at a computer Janet tries to be outside, preferably
on a seabird island with Census
and Sounds.
Rachel Bryant
B.A. (Biology/Philosophy), M.Sc. (Biopsychology)
Rachel is pursuing a PhD in philosophy at the University of Toronto.
Her research combines ethics and the philosophy of science to
investigate the meaning and value of biodiversity. She co-produced
Open Air and Rare Air with Janet Russell. Rachel's radio work
has also been heard on many CBC programs. She likes watching and
listening to wild animals for weeks and months at a time, especially
as part of Census and Sounds.
Monica Kidd
B.Sc. (Zoology and Ecology), M.Sc. (Biology)
Monica Kidd studied biology at the University of Calgary and
Queen's University, completing a M.Sc. in the field of seabird
evolutionary biology. She grew up in rural Alberta, east of the
Rocky Mountains and northwest of the badlands; this is also where
she set her two novels, Beatrice (Turnstone Press, 2001) and Momentum
of Red (Raincoast Books, 2004). Her documentaries for CBC Radio
have won numerous awards.
She lives in St. John's, and is currently a medical student at
Memorial University of Newfoundland
Laura Dominguez
DVM (Veterinary medicine), M.Sc. (Biopsychology)
Before moving to Newfoundland, Laura's work focused on wildlife toxicology, epidemiology and the public education of affected communities in Europe. Laura designed and implemented an adult education program on wildlife management and medicine in Spain. Since moving to Newfoundland, Laura's research has focused on the bio-accumulation of environmental contaminants through the food web. Laura is a correspondent and researcher for
Open Air.
Carolyn Walsh
Carolyn Walsh, BSc(Psychology), MA (Psychology), PhD (Biopsychology)
Raised in Montreal and St. John’s, Carolyn developed a
fascination with the natural world at a young age. After an undergraduate
degree at Memorial University, she went to study parental behaviour
and neuroscience at the University of Toronto before returning
to Memorial to complete a PhD in seabird behaviour and genetics.
She is passionate about mothering her two daughters, teaching,
understanding reproductive ecology, learning how scientists might
better communicate their research to the public, and facilitating
a sense of the wonder of nature in young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Dave Fifield
BSc (Computer Science) , M.Sc. (Behavioural Ecology)
Dave is a seabird biologist who is particularly interested in
seabird ecology during the non-breeding season. He is an avid
birder and naturalist who has worked with a variety of seabird
species at their breeding colonies in Newfoundland and at sea.
Through Alder he is producing a library of Newfoundland avian
vocalizations and developing public interest in nature through
an on-line collection of bird vocalizations and images. Dave is
Alder's computer expert and recording engineer and in his spare
time can often be found building or fixing some form of electronic
gadgetry.
