Open Air:
Natural History Radio
from Newfoundland and Labrador
In March 2000, Alder launched its flagship community radio show,
Open Air: Natural History Radio from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Open Air is broadcast weekly for one hour on CHMR-FM, the
campus and community radio station of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
CIUT-FM, Toronto and CHSR FM, Fredericton, also broadcast Open
Air. Open Air is a magazine style radio program
co-produced by Rachel Bryant and Janet Russell. It presents an
eclectic mix of regular columns, music and special features. The
Alder Institute produces Open Air with help from various
sources of support.
Census
and Sounds
Census
and Sounds is
a long-term seabird population monitoring, avian vocalization
recording and conservation biology audio documentary making project
that began in 2001. At the core of this project is a partnership
between the Alder Institute and the Canadian Wildlife Service
to census seabird colonies in Newfoundland and Labrador. Alder
expands on this censusing program with a related avian vocalization
recording program. This program ultimately aims to record the
vocal repertoire of the avifauna of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Recordings are made available on DAT to the research community
and to a broader audience on the internet in RealAudio. In addition,
we incorporate recordings into documentaries and sound art, which
we broadcast on Alder’s community radio program, Open
Air and archive in mp3 on this website.
